Acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin needles at certain points on the body to stimulate the body’s energy/flow (known as Qi in Chinese Medicine). The acupuncture points are located along pathways called meridians - which are linked to specific internal organs and organ systems. The meridians are essentially responsible for our overall health. A disruption in these pathways can cause disease - by applying acupuncture to certain points, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi, in result, improving health.

Stimulation of specific acupuncture points can cause significant physiological reactions in the body. It stimulates the central nervous system to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain - including our body’s natural pain killers. It can stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself and regain homeostasis.

Some people will respond to treatment more quickly than others. The goal is to individualize each treatment to each patient’s needs and body’s energy - in order to let your body take over the healing process. At your initial visit, we will recommend a treatment plan. After the recommended number of treatments, we will reassess your progress and make any necessary changes.

We will go over each category of your health history and current health concerns. We will make some goals for your well-being. After the intake, we will apply acupuncture needles based on what you are wanting help with that day. This can be anywhere from 10-30 needles. Once all the needles are placed, we allow 25-30 minutes of rest time where the practitioner will leave the room. During that time, it is okay to fall asleep, stay awake, meditate, or just reflect on your day. If any discomfort is experienced while the practitioner is out of the room, we give you a handheld button to “page” us if anything gets uncomfortable for you. After the rest time is up, the practitioner will come back in and pull the needles out. A treatment plan will be recommended and you will be sent on your way until next time!
